In this article we take a look at where to watch live music on Sri Lanka’s South Coast.
Live Music with a view at the Hangten Rooftop Restaurant
On Monday nights, mellifluous tunes will spill out tantalisingly from this awesome rooftop at the centre of Weligama Bay. Sit back with some delicious food and listen to some soulful travellers as they share their musical talents with you. Or, if the generosity of your spirit wishes to give something back then commandeer the stool and entertain you fellow adventures with your own passionate performance. It’s endearing and surprising to see so many people from all over the world playing beautiful songs every week.
Seafood BBQ, Bonfires and Open Mic at Sion Surf Camp
As the sun sets on the last weekday, a bonfire is lit at this breathtaking venue right on the beach in Ahangama. Large fresh fish are brought out and cooked to perfection on wood fired barrel barbecue grills and the music starts to trickle out into the night. Some established musicians, both local and international, will play all kinds of wacky instruments to get your feet moving and your eyes bulging with delight. Ask nicely and you may even get to play a few songs yourself. There’s no doubt it will be one of the most memorable gigs of your life.
Pleasing the Crowds at Dot’s Bay
Dot’s Bay is situated in Hiriketiya Bay near Tangalle. Discovered less than 6 years ago, the area has exploded into a tourist hotspot with a nascent yet vibrant party scene. The owners stay true to hip form and invite some of the brightest emerging musicians on the island to entertain revellers ready to get down. Check their social media during your visit to the South Coast to see what’s on.
